Abstract

Purpose: Collagen sponge is recently used after tooth extraction for socket preservation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the collagen sponge on tissue healing after tooth extraction.

Materials and Methods: A prospective study was performed on 10 patients who had undergone bilateral extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. After tooth extraction, collagen sponge was placed on one side as an experimental group; it was not placed on the other side as a control group. The postoperative pain, bone density, bone height and pocket probing depth were measured.

Results: There was no significant difference in the postoperative pain, bone height and bone density between the two groups. The pocket probing depth was significantly greater on the side that used collagen sponge.

Conclusion: The results suggest that collagen sponge may have a positive effect on the soft tissue healing yet an unpredictable effect on the socket bone preservation.
